Thai Ridgeback Dog: History & Origin
The Thai Ridgeback is one of the oldest and rarest dog breeds in the world, originating from Thailand, particularly in the eastern regions such as Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. These dogs were traditionally used for hunting, guarding homes, and protecting their owners due to their strength, agility, and loyalty.
Historical evidence suggests that the Thai Ridgeback has existed for over 400 years. They appear in ancient Thai manuscripts and temple murals from the Ayutthaya period, showing their long-standing bond with humans. In the past, they were highly valued for their hunting skills, especially when tracking wild boars and other large animals.
One of the breed’s most distinctive features is the ridge of hair along its back, which grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. This unique trait makes them one of only four ridgeback breeds in the world. Thai Ridgebacks are also known for their intelligence, independence, and protective instincts, making them excellent companions for experienced dog owners.
Today, the Thai Ridgeback is gaining popularity internationally and is officially recognized by global canine organizations, including the FCI and AKC. Their elegant appearance, combined with their ancient heritage, makes them one of the most fascinating dog breeds in the world.
